( 0 Articles )
What is this tool?
Tracert (also called traceroute) will trace the route that packets take from one destination to another. The tool here will trace the route that a packet takes from our web server to the destination that you enter (either a host name, such as www.example.com, or an IP address). The results display a list of routers traversed (the path taken) for a packet from our web server to reach a particular destination on the network. A timeout can be set if your internet connection is very slow.

DNS Timing
( 0 Articles )
What is this tool?
The DNS Timing Report will test to see how long it takes for your DNS servers to respond, taking many factors into consideration (timeouts, lame delegations, etc.), and gives you a score (from an F to an A+). It then lists any problems (such as a slow response, timeouts, etc.). Normally, you would enter www.example.com and use the A record (you can use other hosts or records, but the timing is typically the same). This test can be useful in comparing two different web hosts that provide DNS service.

Reverse DNS lookup
( 1 Article )
What is this tool?
This test will see if a reverse DNS entry exists for an IP address, and will also show you how the entry is found (the route of DNS servers that is taken), and who to contact to get a reverse DSN entry if none is found. The RFCs say that you should have a reverse DNS entry for every host on the Internet. If a mail server is missing a reverse DNS entry, other mail servers may reject mail from it. It supports IPv6 reverse DNS lookups, too.
How do the results help me?
- To get Info about an IP causing problems
- To verify that a mail server has a Reverse DNS Entry
- To Gather Data about who is visiting your web site
The advanced version features the server field allows you to test the reverse DNS on a new DNS server.

DNS Lookup
( 0 Articles )
What is this tool?
The domain name system (DNS) stores and associates many types of information with registered domain names (like dnsstuff.com). It also translates domain names to IP addresses and records the mail servers that accept mail for each domain. The DNS Lookup test performs a standard DNS lookup, and returns details about the specified record type(s) as well as additional useful information about the domain's DNS entries. Example: For the A record type, a DNS lookup provides information about how the domain or host name is resolved to an IP address (example, 192.168.1.1).
*To lookup a PTR record, be sure to populate the "enter domain or hostname" field in the proper format for a PTR record (i.e., ip_in_reverse_order.in-addr.arpa). You may find it easier to use our Reverse DNS Lookup tool to lookup PTR records.

Ping
( 0 Articles )
What is this tool?
Ping checks to see how long it takes packets to get from one Internet host to another. Note that it is highly dependent on the connection speed of both hosts (as well as server load, and the load of routers along the way). The tool here will report the time that it takes a packet to go from our web server to the host you enter. Note that tracert almost always provides more useful information. For IPv6 pings, enter the IPv6 address or the hostname preceded by a colon (':host.example.com').
How do the results help me?
- Network Troubleshooting
- Response Times
Similar to the traceroute tool, this will help you test basic connectivity for your domains and IPs. It will not trace the path of the packet, however.

ISP Cached DNS Lookup
( 0 Articles )
What is this tool?
This tool lets you look up a DNS record at the DNS servers of many popular Internet providers. This lets you see which one(s) have cached DNS entries. That way, if you just made a DNS change, you can see when major ISPs will detect the change. Note that this test is specially designed so that it instructs the DNS server not to add the DNS record to its cache, if it is not already there (so future lookups will not be spoiled).
How do the results help me?
If you want to make sure that your DNS entries are propagating in a timely manner, this tool can help you determine who knows about your DNS changes and who doesn't.
